Sat, June 19, 2004 - practice Practice day speeds ran from high 70's for standard, with MM winning the day. I don't recall the winner for sports, but it was in the mid 70's. The high 80's was the winning speed for 15 Meter, and you only get one guess as to who. Remember this was just the practice day. Fly safe, Soar high, Thermal tight. # 711 reporting. Sun, June 20, 2004 - day 1 It was a wow day with one climb by QV, the weather man, at 18 kts over 3 thousand feet, ya, I mean wow. P7, as of now, smoked everyone at 92 mph DRY in the 15 meter over a course of 268 miles. KS wins sports class at a raw 89 mph in his DUO, OE as of now is leading the standard, but 7V, says that this was his best day ever and we are waiting his scores. It was good, I mean really good, other then some late day virga that slowed down a couple, including 711. Launch went a little slow until the pattern changed for the towplanes, then the tow pilots really worked hard to get everyone up. We have only four towplanes with one being stuck in Denver by weather. Charlie will be posting his reports on the SSA web site, so 711 hopes you all enjoyed. . Charlie and the advisors just let everyone call thier first turn as all classes got a MAT of 3 hrs. The sky was covered with high clouds, but X reported 11 thousand so launch was started. Well, Mr. Big Bumper came cruising in from the west towards Cedar City. About , well, alot didn't make it home, some got airtows, others used the trailer and the buy dinner thing. Launch came Starts happened, gee, relights happened, but some did get the mileage and speed. P7 and RW did really well in 15 Meter. Standards got a big toss up with IT now winning the day.. We are waiting for more sports class guys to show back up as some top names didn't get back. Yours truly ridge soared for about 45 minutes till the massive cloud drifted east, then went out in the sun where lift started again and then add mileage and speed. Never have I flew so long for so little to be really happy to get home. Whew, others did the same with RW hanging on one valley over and not being able to clear the ridge top. for almost a hour. Those that flew the task in sports class, hmmmm, I see speeds of 24 mph in the lead right now. IT looks to be in 1st place in Standard. P7 is in first place in 15 Meter. The front has gone thur, so the next few days look really good. Tonight, at dinner, we had a live Golden Eagle who was on show with his Master. This was something to see. The best climb of the day was SM with a 17 kt average over several thousand. Folks, these aren't vario readings, but the average climb over several thousand ft. seen on See You. Yep, all had great flights, everybody home, and a dinner made only for Kings and Queens. We even had little foam gliders to play with at the dinner tables, ya just had to be here to understand that one. Speeds....OE wins the day in Standard, KS wins the day in Sports and 711 wins the day in 15 Meter. High speed for the day, DRY, was 15 meter at 89.44 mph over 312 miles. Climbs were on the average of 7 to 10 kts. with glides around 20 miles. Powerband was 12,500 to 16,500 ft. Tomorrow we are waiting for cause its going to be even better yet. Some of the gang flew down to the Grand Canyon today for their first turn. Yep, a big wow and smilin faces. Fly safe, Thermal tight, Soar high. # 711 reporting. Wed, June 23, 2004 - day 4 Some build ups, so, like whats the problem man. Like none, 7V blew the doors off in Standard at 93 mph. KS ran around 90 mph in Sports. Then comes P7, like 98 mph in 15 Meter. The weather did have bumpers in all areas. Standards had a AST, 15 Meters changed to a 1 turn MAT with a 3 hour window. Sports had a MAT also. Most came home from the North, and their were micro bursts all around the airport area. Some got big down, over 18 kts was reported by one. WX still leads Standard with 7V close behind. P7 leads 15 Meter with RW in second. Sports has 9B still in 1st, with KS a handful of points behind. Some long runs with strong lift, bottoms above 180, so we cann't go over 17,500 with getting our hands slapped. The ground crew, Brian and Paul, with his 2 sons, and several others are really doing a great job, along with the tow pilots. Karl and Iris are putting on a really great show. Charlie, both of them, ha, ha, are doing well also. Today Charlie S. was told he was kinda grumpy, and he asked some of us if he had been that way. Of course with our points in his control, we said it just could not of been him, and in a short while, he was smilin from ear to ear, and that folks is one big grin. From the first contest day, all of the new contest pilots are getting a 30 minute brief by KS, X, and SM. They are doing this to help the new contest pilots out by a question and answer period. Well, its a ASW 27b, DRY, driven by GW, Steve Koerner. On a 2 hr TAT. All classes flew a TAT cause of build ups. We launched early, 11:25 am was first tow. Black flat bottom building cu are seen by all at 180 plus with lift to 15 kts, and streeting. Ok, 9B still is in first with KS really close behind. KS wins the day in Sports. WX wins the day in Standard and still in first with 7V close behind. P7 still in first with RW in second. Most of the speeds were between 80 to 90 mph. We have 2 days to go. Tonight is a dinner in the hangar with some gooooood stuff. Today I heard, just heard, that the City fathers are going to add 2000 ft to make the runway 7000 ft long. And add a dirt runway for the tow planes. Also, the area by the new paved ramp, like its so large 55 sailplanes are having no problem tieing down or getting back in the box, is getting setup for RV and camping spots. Remember next year the Sports Class will be here, and just maybe one or two regionals. QV is doing a great job on the weather, with WX helping out. To the south, more build ups, to the North, more, and oh ya, west also. We grid at 11:15 am. The pilots meeting is pushed back to 12:30, a little after 1 pm the day is cancelled due to bumpers everywhere. We rush to get back in the box as lighting is seen to the east and south. Most are pleased as now we use today as a rest day. Most put back in the box, just in case those white balls fall out of the sky. Right now its picking up wind outside and we could be in for some rain showers. Tomorrow is the last day, the weather gods may speak again, we shall see. Thermal tight, Soar high, Fly safe. # 711 reporting. Sat, June 26, 2004 - day 7 Today the weather gods removed just enough moisture to let us race on this the last day. I am heading now for Hobbs, so in a short while will posts the days their. Thermal tight, Soar high, Fly safe. # 711 reporting. ###
